Dr. Bruce Symons

Chiropractor

RateMD Reviews

Dr. Bruce Symons was born in Hong Kong to Scottish and Chinese parents, and the entire family immigrated to Vancouver when he was 11 years old. He obtained his Bachelors in Zoology from the University of B.C. in 1985. He then relocated to Calgary in 1986, and completed the Biotechnology program at SAIT in 1987. With an interest in neurobiology research, he finished a Masters degree in Medical Science (specialization: Neuroscience) at the University of Calgary in 1992. During his time at the university, he developed a herniated disc in his low back and was told he would likely be paralyzed from the waist down. After intensive treatment with his family chiropractor for over a year, the disc symptoms resolved, and he was so impressed with chiropractic philosophy that he enrolled in the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College, graduating in 1997. He returned to Calgary to practice, and began a PhD at the Human Performance Lab, Faculty of Kinesiology, University of Calgary in 2001, focusing on the bio-mechanics of neck manipulation and stroke. Dr. Symons is an acknowledged expert in neck manipulation, and has published numerous peer-reviewed articles internationally on neck manipulation and stroke. He is married and has one son. This led him to study Contemporary Medical Acupuncture at McMaster University in Hamilton which is highly effective in treating joint and muscular problems. As well, he utilizes manual Chiropractic adjustments, instrument assisted soft tissue treatment (such as Graston or Guasha), muscle and fascial release techniques and intramuscular stimulation (IMS). Most importantly, he maintains a keen interest in prescribing and promoting exercise and stretching for patient’s own active care.

Ed Middleton, PT

Physical Therapist

Ed graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy with Distinction. For more than 20 years, he has dedicated himself to guiding and assisting his clients’ return to work, to sport, or any activity that physical injury was preventing them from enjoying. Ed’s focus is unwaveringly on the needs of his clients. While some people attend physio with a clear goal in mind, many do not: Ed’s strength is in his ability to listen to his clients thus helping them set reachable goals, and achieve successful outcomes.
He has specialized expertise and training in treating concussion, a wide variety of acute injuries, repetitive strain injuries, and stubborn chronic problems that don’t seem to want to go away. He is also skilled in developing post-surgical rehabilitation programs, and running programs to prevent injury.
While Ed believes in continuous learning and research, he also understands that a client knows their body best and an integral part of the client-therapist relationship is communication and developing a relationship where both parties openly share information and complete their assigned tasks.
Treatments usually involve various manual therapy techniques, individualized exercise programs, and instruction in pain management techniques to help you get back to what you love to do, pain free and stronger than ever.
It’s true that active people make the best physiotherapists. Outside of the clinic, Ed maintains an active lifestyle with a passion for competitive dance, climbing, golf, soccer, running, hiking, snowshoeing, and snowboarding. His participation in these sports and many others, gives him a strong insight into the unique needs of each athlete. Over the years, Ed has coached soccer across all age and skill levels, and is currently the team physiotherapist to the Calgary Rams Rugby Club.
He believes that maintaining a mobile body with good muscle balance is the key to a high quality of life.
